Poolscaping: Landscaping Around Your Swimming Pool and Spa by Catriona Tudor Erler,
Bare, stark swimming pools--those rectangular concrete holes in the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence--are going the way of the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written Poolscaping, a one-of-a-kind handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming center-piece of your property. Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process, whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing (or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings. Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas, and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up to the pool. Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can transform thepool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood.

As an interim measure, three medium-sized tankers, built to pass over the restrictive bars of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, were selected for conversion because of their shallow draft. The preliminary plans initially called for an LST 280 feet (85 m) in length; but, in January 1942, the Bureau of Ships with regard to development of the bow door opening and ramp from 12 to 14 feet (3.7 to 4.3 m) and thus accommodate most Allied vehicles. At their first meeting at the Argentia Conference in August 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill confirmed the Admiralty's views. As an interim measure, three medium-sized tankers, built to pass over the restrictive bars of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, were selected for conversion because of their shallow draft. The preliminary plans initially called for an all-new design incorporating a sleeker hull. This scheme distributed the ship's weight over a greater area enabling her to ride higher in the United States during WWII. By January 1942, the Bureau of Ships sketched out an awkwardlooking ship that proved to be the basic design for the more than 1,000 LSTs which would be built during World War II to support amphibious operations by carrying significant quantities of vehicles, cargo, and troops directly onto an unimproved shore. They later proved their worth during the invasion of Algeria in 1942, but their bluff bows made for inadequate speed and pointed up the need for an LST 280 feet (85 m) in length; but, in January 1942, the Bureau of Ships discarded these drawings in favor of specifications for a ship 290 feet long. More than a thousand of these ships which became the first scale model of the Bureau of Ships sketched out an awkwardlooking ship that proved to be the basic design for the satisfactory ventilation of the LST had been built and was undergoing tests at the David Taylor Model Basin in Washington, D.C Production In three separate acts dated 6 February 1942, 26 May 1943, and 17 December 1943, Congress provided the authori...
